Free Online Chess vs Computer or a Friend
Play a full game of chess in your browser — against a computer opponent with four strength levels, or pass-and-play with a friend. Every rule is supported: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate.
How to play Chess
- Tap a piece to see its legal moves (dots), then tap a highlighted square to move.
- Choose vs AI and a level: Beginner, Casual, Club or Strong — or 2 players on one device.
- Put the enemy king in checkmate to win. If a player has no legal move but isn't in check, it's stalemate (a draw).
- Use Undo to take back a move, Flip to turn the board, and Hint for a suggested move.
- Your game saves automatically — close the tab and continue later.
Tips & strategy
Control the centre
Pawns and pieces on e4, d4, e5 and d5 give your army space and options.
Develop before attacking
Bring out knights and bishops and castle early before launching an attack.
Check every capture
Before each move ask: what does my opponent threaten, and is any of my pieces undefended?
Trade when ahead
If you are up material, exchanging pieces makes your advantage easier to convert.
